November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. It is estimated that 228,190 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013, and a further 159,480 Americans will die of the disease. But lung cancer is beatable and here at Angeles Health we offer a unique, groundbreaking alternative cancer treatment program.

This month we talk about how you can help to protect your lungs and reduce your risks of developing lung cancer and other types of cancer too.

When our lung cells come into contact with dangerous or cancer causing chemicals, they mutate slightly. Mutated cells can grow and spread too quickly, causing cancer, damaging healthy cells and impairing the function of the surrounding tissue. By trying to stop yourself from breathing in these dangerous chemicals, you can reduce your lung cancer risks.

Reduce Your Lung Cancer Risks
Smoking is the biggest risk factor for lung cancer, although there are other risk factors too. Exposure to more than one lung cancer risk factor increases your chance of developing lung cancer. For non-smokers, the lifetime risk for developing lung cancer is significantly smaller than that of smokers. However, 10% of lung cancer cases arise in non-smokers; by taking steps to keep your lungs healthy you can reduce your lung cancer risks.

1. Quit smoking. By quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke you can greatly reduce your lung cancer risks. Some studies say that by dramatically cutting down on the amount you smoke can help too, although other studies say that cutting down doesn’t help.

2. Radon test your home. After smoking, Radon is the second cause of lung cancer in America. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that occurs naturally and is harmless in small levels. Radon comes from rock and soil and is impossible to avoid; soil emits the chemical and it can get into buildings; homes, schools, offices through cracks in foundations, basements, walls, windows or other openings within a building. Radon is impossible to detect by sight or smell, but radon detectors are inexpensive and can be found in most hardware stores. By testing your home you can help to protect you and your family from this silent threat.

3. Work Safe. Exposure to certain carcinogenic chemicals, such as asbestos, can cause lung cancer. Regulations have been put into place over the years to protect individuals from health threats within the workplace. If you believe that you are exposed to dangerous substances without adequate protection, speak to your health and safety inspector to ensure that theya re following regulations.

4. Fight Pollution. In October 2013, air pollution was classified as a factor that can cause lung cancer. By joining the fight to reduce air pollution you can help to reduce the levels of chemicals in the air that we all breathe, all day, every day.
