Spring is most definitely in the air. So while you are thinking about cleaning out your garage, or giving your house a clean, don’t forget the thing that keeps you alive and well; your body.
Your liver is a remarkable organ, we know now that it can regrow itself even if two thirds of it are removed. The liver can regenerate after damage and even grow or shrink following a transplant to suit the needs of the recipient. But every single day your liver gets a bashing; from a range of substances that you may encounter, including carbohydrates, protein, and, of course, alcohol.
Your liver, while you barely give it a thought, has literally hundreds of different jobs to do. Amongst other things, your liver detoxifies your body of chemicals in the environment, stores vitamins and minerals, regulates cholesterol levels and hormones and breaks down fat. Without your liver you, quite simply, wouldn’t survive modern day living, with its pollutants, pesticides, food additives and many unavoidable chemicals.
Here are some simple things that you can do to say “thank you to your liver by giving it a good spring clean:
1. Give it a Squeeze. Kick off your day with a large glass of water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed into it. The water will help to flush the toxins out of your body and the lemon juice helps your liver to digest food by stimulating the production of bile and also by mimicking bile.
2. Get Garlicky. Not only do garlic and onions taste great, they are good for your health too. Love your liver by eating lots of alliums (onions and garlic), which are packed a phytonutrients to help break down deposits of fat in the body, including the liver as well as killing fungi, viruses and bacteria and protecting your body from heart disease.
3. Spice Things Up. Turmeric, found in a lot of Indian food, is a potent healer. Lowering cholesterol and an effective anti-inflammatory, this yellow spice also protects the liver from damage from free radicals.
4. Go Global. Globe artichokes are one of your liver’s best friends. It’s packed with silymarin, a powerful antioxidant shown to be beneficial to liver function whilst protecting against cancer. Like lemon, artichokes also promote gallbladder production, so help your liver to get rid of toxins.
