Did you know that January is National Oatmeal month? In January Americans consume more oatmeal than any other month of the year. According to oat manufacturers, we buy enough oatmeal in January to make 470 million bowls of it.

Here are some great reasons to put oatmeal on your shopping list this month:

Fight Cravings: Oatmeal is low calorie and keeps you fuller for longer. Whether you enjoy it slowly cooked with water (not milk) or you blend a handful of oatmeal in your smoothies, at 130 calories a cup, this slow releasing energy will fill you up and keep stave off the hunger for longer too.

High in protein and fiber, low in fat. Oatmeal is one of the best grains for giving high protein levels, whilst packing low levels of fat. Throw in high fiber levels too, and you have got yourself a fantastic start to your day.

Fight Bad Cholesterol. Oatmeal contains beta-glucan, a unique fiber with a range of benefits. One of these benefits of beta-glucan is the lowering of bad cholesterol.

Protect Against Some Cancers. Many whole grains, including oatmeal, contain plant lignans. Once ingested, these plant lignans are converted to mammalian lignans, which are believed to help protect against hormone related cancers like breast cancer.

Protect Your Heart. A Harvard study found that men who had a bowl of wholegrain cereal for breakfast had a 29% lower risk of heart failure than those who didn’t enjoy wholegrain breakfasts. The most easy, convenient and unrefined whole grain cereal is, of course, oatmeal.

Boost Immunity. Beta-gluten is a unique fiber found in oatmeal which is shown to help neutrophils (infection-fighting white blood cells) to travel to sites of infection more quickly, as well as magnifying their bacteria-fighting potential once they arrive at the site of infection.

Improve Your Skin. Ok, by now we know that eating oatmeal is great for us. But did you know that you can put it in the bath, or us one it as a facemask to help keep your skin clean, hydrated and healthy? Add a cup of oatmeal to your bath, or mix oatmeal with honey and warm water to keep your skin glowing!
