There are many reasons to choose weight loss surgery. It can help to resolve health issues like heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, infertility, sleep apnea, hypertension, and more. It’s important to work with your doctor to determine the right kind of weight loss surgery for you.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

As one of the most effective weight loss procedures, gastric bypass surgery involves “splitting” the stomach into two parts. The upper-most section, measuring only an inch or so in diameter, will be the only part to collect food, bypassing the lower region of the stomach and a portion of the small intestines, thus reducing the amount of calories absorbed.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery is a permanent approach to weight loss. Working similarly to bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery involves shrinking the stomach, only this time a section of the stomach is permanently removed and replaced with a sleeve or banana-shaped tube.

Gastric Band Surgery

For those who prefer a more flexible approach to weight loss surgery, gastric band surgery (also known as lap band surgery) involves placing a band around the stomach which makes it function as though it was smaller. Unlike the other procedures listed so far, the band can be adjusted to decrease or increase food digestion. It can be removed later if you choose.

Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery

As one of the newest forms of weight loss surgery, gastric sleeve plication surgery is becoming quite popular (albeit difficult to come by in the U.S.) because it is minimally invasive, reversible, and highly effective. The procedure creates a pleat or fold in the stomach tissue to reduce its capacity. Unlike many other weight loss surgeries, however, gastric sleeve plication surgery can be reversed with limited healing time.
