Skin and muscle tissue does have some ability to stretch and contract with changes in body shape. Overstretched skin and muscle tissue occurs for a variety of reasons, including extreme weight loss or weight gain, or as a result of pregnancy, creating loose skin and the dreaded “stretch marks.”. Multiple pregnancies or pregnancy occurring later in life, or pregnancy accompanied by extreme weight gain are particularly prone to creating overstretched tissue. As the body ages, skin loses elasticity and overstretching is even more likely. When overstretching has occurred, abdominal tissue does not always respond to diet and exercise.
