About LAP-BAND®
LAP-BAND® surgery refers to the surgical placing of an
inflatable silicon medical device around the top portion of a
patient's stomach, a procedure that treats obesity by
restricting patient eating to smaller portions of food, enabling
patients to feel hungry less often and lose weight naturally
over time.
First developed by Swedish doctors in the early 1980s, modern
adjustable gastric banding procedures have been practiced
worldwide since the mid 1990s, with the first devices approved
for use in the U.S certified by the FDA in 2001. By January 2008
more than 350,000 LAP-BAND® systems were distributed worldwide
and the benefits of this safe, least-invasive weight loss
surgery procedure were well known.
