Meniscus Repair

Athletes usually tear the meniscus through twisting movements when the knee is bent or flexed, with inner (medial) meniscus tears being generally more common than tears to the outer meniscus. Injuries requiring meniscus repair or meniscus surgery often occur in combination with injuries to other structures of the knee such as the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL). Older patients may also injure the meniscus without major trauma as the meniscus cartilage weakens with age.

Meniscus surgery at Angeles Health is minimally invasive and can be done using a local anesthetic. The surgeon makes a small incision allowing introduction of tools about the size of a pencil into the knee, where the meniscus is repaired by either trimming or removing just the damaged portion of the cartilage and closing the wound with sutures or surgical staples.
